NJ Divorce Mediators Are Settlement Coaches

For anyone in NJ seeking divorce mediation services one of the questions you must be asking yourself is this: is this going to work?  Given that you and your spouse have probably spent a fair amount of time not getting along, how can going to see a NJ divorce mediator help us resolve our differences and get us to agree on a settlement?  You see some clients who come to see me at Equitable Mediation Services believe that as a NJ divorce mediator I have some magic answer to all of their challenges and that by using a divorce mediation service such as ours all of their past troubles will disappear but this is not so.   Divorce mediation takes effort on behalf of everyone involved: the client couple and the NJ divorce mediator to work together to come to an agreement (also known as the Memorandum of Understanding) that is fair and equitable for both parties.  As a NJ divorce mediator I want you to think of me not as someone who will create your settlement for you but as your “settlement coach” guiding you through the process and teaching you the things you need to know in order to make an informed decision about your divorce and your future.

When you think about the role of a coach in the field of athletics, their job is to work with an athlete as much as they can off the field to help them improve their skills and performance while on the field of play.  Coaches offer helpful guidance and suggestions on the athlete’s performance and how they could possibly improve whatever it is they are working on.   The coach brings their years of experience (many professional coaches are former athletes in their chosen field of play) and with that experience, the wisdom to see the bigger picture and what options may be available to that athlete to improve on their performance and in turn improve their chances of success.  As a NJ divorce mediator I do the same thing except instead of preparing you for the Super Bowl or Olympics, I’m preparing you for something even more important: the rest of your life.

Sure there is glory in achieving the pinnacle of success in your chosen field of sport but that is a single moment in time and one that many never experience and some who do, never see again.  But life happens every day and it takes work to succeed both now and into the future.  As a NJ divorce mediator working with you as your settlement coach, I will provide you with the knowledge and options you need in order to create the kinds of agreements that will get you a mutually satisfactory result.  Sadly, there is no championship ring or parade at the end of the divorce mediation process but by working together you can go forward with the knowledge that each of you actively participated and compromised to come to an agreement that each of you and your children can live with and avoided the contentious and litigious world of lawyers and the courts.
