Don't Go It Alone Use Divorce Mediation
January 5, 2010 by Joseph F Dillon
As a divorce mediator in NJ, it may be a bit odd for me to say Happy New Year since if you’re reading this post, you’re probably contemplating a divorce and in the middle of one of the most painful and confusing decisions you’ll ever have to make. But as it does for many of us, the new year brings with it the resolve to make a change and here at Equitable Mediation Services that means an increase in the number of inquiries for divorce mediation services. So while it might not make you feel better about your particular situation, it may help to know you’re not alone which brings me to the topic of today’s article: divorce is not something you should try to do yourself.
When you reached the proverbial “fork in the road” of your relationship, you were confronted with two choices: stay married or divorce. In order to stay married, perhaps you tried therapy, talking it out together or sought the counsel of friends and family and similarly went through the same machinations when contemplating divorce. The point is you didn’t do this in a vacuum and you didn’t do it alone. You sought the help of both professionals and friends and came to a decision that worked for you. This process is exactly what divorce mediation can do for you now that you’ve made the decision to divorce. Decisions about parenting plans, equitable distribution, child support and spousal support (formerly known as alimony in New Jersey) all come with their own unique shades of gray and you’ll need a caring, professionally trained and accredited NJ divorce mediator to help guide you through it. Having personally negotiated complex agreements for the better part of 20 years, I can promise you won’t be able to learn everything you need to know in a book or on a website and then effectively proceed with your divorce on your own no matter how simple the salesperson at the “Do It Yourself Divorce” store makes it sound.
So now what? Well, much like you’re doing right this very minute, it is important to educate yourself about your options and the process so allow me to direct you to a few resources that I think will help. First, is this overview about divorce mediation which will give you an idea of the process and the topics that we will cover during our sessions. Next is this article that talks about the benefits of mediation since I want to be sure that you know couples who mediate typically save at least $20,000 on their divorce and come to the same or better outcomes in a fraction of the time. Last is an invitation to contact us to schedule a free, no obligation consultation once you’re ready to proceed as we know that once you learn more, you’ll agree that mediation is the smarter way to divorce and want you to know that you don’t have to go it alone.
